Welcome to Moda Fabrics!
French General

French General
My creative textile journey began in 1997 when my sister and I opened French General in a restored barn overlooking the Hudson River in New York. What started as a small shop filled with antique French linens, vintage textiles, and carefully curated treasures has grown into a lifelong passion for quilting, fabric design, teaching, writing, and preserving the beauty of traditional handwork.
For the past 15 years, I have been honored to design fabric collections for Moda Fabrics, drawing inspiration from antique quilts, French textiles, faded florals, and the timeless colors of nature. Each collection is created with the hope that today's makers will stitch heirlooms to be treasured for generations. For 12 years, I also designed home décor fabrics for Fabricut, bringing the warmth and character of vintage-inspired textiles into homes around the world.
Sharing creativity has always been at the heart of French General. For the past 18 years, I have led the French General France Getaway, introducing travelers to the markets, gardens, textile traditions, and artisans of South West France that continue to inspire my work. For the past 12 years, TheGather in Vermont has welcomed makers from around the world to slow down, learn traditional skills, and experience the joy of creating together.
Giving back through quilting has become one of the most meaningful parts of my work. For more than 12 years, the Navajo Quilt Project has donated fabric to elders across the Navajo Nation while engaging with local communities through quilt-making, supporting traditional ceremonies and giveaways, and empowering others to develop sewing skills and build their own businesses. The project reflects my belief that handmade quilts can bring comfort, preserve culture, and strengthen communities.
Over the years, along with my husband, we have written books, taught thousands of students, explored natural dyeing, embroidery, and slow stitching, and encouraged makers to embrace a creative life rooted in history, craftsmanship, and connection. Whether I am designing a new Moda collection, leading a workshop, or stitching alongside friends, my goal remains the same: to honor the traditions of the past while inspiring others to create something beautiful with their own hands.
I believe the best quilts tell stories. Every fabric collection, every class, every journey, and every stitch is an invitation to slow down, gather with others, and celebrate the enduring beauty of making by hand.
