Best in Sew: Make Your Own Prize Ribbons
Every quilter deserves a ribbon — and not just for blue-ribbon quilts.
We’re talking about the everyday wins: straight-ish seams, binding finally finished, or simply showing up to sew.

With Moda’s new “Best in Sew” Prize Ribbons project, you can celebrate those small but mighty moments in true maker style. Hosted by Jessie and Sarah on our Made with Moda YouTube series, this low-sew project is the perfect excuse to dig into your stash of fabrics, ribbons, labels, zipper pulls, and all those charming notions we quilters can’t resist saving.

What You’ll Need

It doesn’t take much to make your own “Best in Sew” ribbons!
The Essentials
- ¾ to 1½ yards of fabric or a fun selection of scraps (use one or mix two for extra contrast)
- Cardboard or foam-core for the backing circles
- Hot glue gun
The Fun Extras
- Decorative ribbons or webbing
- Woven quilt labels and tags
- Zipper charms
- Buttons
- Patches
Mix and match to create something colorful, quirky, and uniquely you.
How to Make It

- Pleat & Ruffle: Start with your pressed and stitched fabric strips, then pleat them around a cardboard circle for the base.
- Gather & Layer: Add a second ruffle inside the first to give your ribbon depth and texture
- Add the Tails: Fold and glue your fabric strips to form the signature “tails.”
- Finish with Flair: Glue a decorative circle to the front, add your favorite saying, and top it off with labels, trims, or charms.
That’s it! No precision piecing or intricate quilting required — just creativity and a hot glue gun. Download the free pattern and templates for more detailed instructions and measurements!
