The Moda team is getting ready for a long holiday weekend… Time to plan a quick project!

For many of us, that means a pillow. We’re big fans of the humble pillow around here – all the joys of quilting, neatly condensed into a plump little package. You don’t need as much fabric, so they’re a great scrap-buster; they are much easier to machine quilt yourself (a big win for beginning quilters); and if you’re pressed for time or just don’t mind, you don’t even have to quilt them at all.

They’re also an excellent opportunity to practice working with zippers, if you are so inclined.

Our friend Carrie Nelson is the Pillow Queen – she designed and made dozens of pillows for Moda over the years, and today, we’re resharing several of her festive, patriotic pillow patterns.

Stripes & One Star and Stripes & Stars – the OG patterns, first published in 2017. Carrie used a variety of Fig Tree & Co. prints for the lumbar pillow and Bonnie & Camille prints for the square pillow. She remade them a few years later with newer fabrics from the same designers.

A few years later, Carrie revisited those patterns and created a couple of new ones – Stripes & Three Stars, two ways: a lumbar version and a square version.

These two patterns use the same size star block, which makes it even easier and more efficient to make both at once!

In addition to her Fig Tree & Co. and Bonnie and Camille versions, she made Stripes & Three Stars pillows using lovely pinks and soft blues from a couple of Minick & Simpson collections and included some wovens. Perfection!
