First Love Quilt
First Love Quilt
Welcome to Moda Bake Shop! I'm Kairle Oaks of Handcrafted Goodness and I'm so glad to be back to share a new recipe with you. My First Love quilt is just the right size to welcome a new baby into the world. Or you can add a few more blocks and you've got the prefect throw sized quilt to snuggle up with your love.
I'm so in love with Ella and Ollie fabrics by Fig Tree & Co. The soft, romantic colors are just the right touch for these quick and easy to piece heart blocks. I hope you'll enjoy this recipe.
This quilt finishes at 43" x 43".
1 Jelly Roll® {Ella & Ollie by Fig Tree & Co.}
1/2 yard cream background fabric {20308-16 Milk}
1 yard small print fabric {20307-16 Milk}
1-1/2 yards backing fabric {20300-16 Milk}
3/8 yard binding fabric {20306-21 Strawberry}
Please read through the entire tutorial before you begin.
All seam allowances are 1/4".
From Jelly Roll, cut:
- Twenty-seven (27) 10.5" x 2.5" strips
- Eighteen (18) 6.5" x 2.5" strips
Note: I used 12 Jelly Roll strips for my quilt, but you can use any combination of fabric strips from your Jelly Roll.
From cream background, cut:
- Nine (9) 4.5" x 4.5"squares
- Thirty-six (36) 2.5" x 2.5" squares
From small print, cut:
- Four (4) 10.5" x 10.5" squares
- Two (2) 16" x 16" squares; cut each square into four pieces, cutting diagonally from corner to corner (use for side triangles)
- Two (2) 8.5" x 8.5" squares; cut each square into two pieces, cutting diagonally from corner to corner (use for corner triangles)
It's helpful to arrange the Jelly Roll strips on your design wall, making sure to mix them so that you have a good variety of fabrics in each heart block.
For each heart block, you will need the following pieces.
Draw a diagonal line on the back of each 2.5" x 2.5" square background piece.
Attach as shown below, sewing on the diagonal line and using the stitch-and-flip method.
Flip the corners back and press, making sure that all layers align. Trim the back two layers.
Continue to assemble each block as shown.
Lay out all pieces on your design wall, as shown. Sew together in diagonal rows.
Trim quilt top so that it is even around the edges, leaving at least 1/4" seam allowance at the points of the blocks.
To piece the backing, cut the backing fabric approximately 15" from the selvage edge from top to bottom. Use Jelly Roll strips to piece a scrappy strip down the back.
Quilt as desired and bind.
Quilted by Utah Valley Quilting.
This quilt finishes at 43" x 43".
