The original version of this project was made in a patriotic colorway using Vintage by Sweetwater. For this remix, we're showing you how it looks in Sunday Brunch by Basic Grey, which is hitting quilt stores this month.
Instead of using a two color palette, I added a third color for this one - yellow, pink and aqua to make it feel more like Spring.
This is a relatively easy and beginner-friendly pattern. However, I did want to share a tip for piecing this one to help keep things accurate as you assemble the block. This project uses a diagonal seam method (or sometimes called "snowball corners") to create the angled point in the block. Any time I sew these, I always take a quick minute to clean up the unit by checking the size and trimming, if needed. When I press these corners, I am also careful to "press" vs "iron" - by this I mean I will lift the iron to move it vs push the seam with my iron. This will help avoid distorting the fabric.
You can see above that for this piece, it just needed a very slight trim to get it to proper size. But in doing so, it will make it easier to more accurately line up adjacent pieces when I got to join them.
For this project, you'll make three blocks and then the secondary block comes together via the sashing and border strips.
I am really enjoy the bright colors of this new Sunday Brunch collection.
I quilted this one with some straight lines, following the seams in the block as a guide. Of course, there are many ways you could quilt this, including free motion quilting, if preferred.
Here is the Sunday Brunch version next to the original.
I have included a couple of mock ups in other new collections arriving to shops this month. Portofino by Fig Tree and Flower Patches by Amarilys Henderson. Which one is your favorite?
If your local shop is carrying one of these collections, ask them to kit one up for you or help you select prints from another collection that catches your eye!
Next month, we will be making the Bloomberg pattern. See you back here on February 20th for our next installment of the Table Runner Club Series.
