My Favorite Color is Moda - Block 15

It's September and we’re sewing, and talking about, Block 15 of the My Favorite Color is Moda Sampler quilt-along.

CT MFC Block 15 Coastal Cool Block

If you haven’t joined in on the quilt-along yet, there’s always time to catch up!  Check with your local quilt shop for the pattern and any fabric or kits they’ve put together. We’ll be sharing a new block or blocks on the First Tuesday of every month for the rest of 2021.

Note: If you’re sewing ahead, check the end of this post for all current pattern corrections.

This month, we’re showing the block in the Coastal Cool colorway of Bellas.  As far as the fabrics from the pattern, it features Bellas 9900 122 Betty’s Blue, 9900 174 American Blue, 9900 429 Driftwood, 9900 98 White Bleached, 9900 201 Sand, and 9900 34 Aqua.

When you get to the construction, you’ll see the piecing in this block is actually a bit of a ‘cheat’ for a complicated looking half square triangle.  Instead of aligning and squaring up a pieced section with a larger triangle piece, it is broken down into smaller squares, HST’s and rectangles to piece together.  One of the beauties of working with solids is the freedom to simplify your piecing and break things down into more manageable pieces, without sacrificing the final look.

One tip for keeping everything organized as you work on Block 15?  Remember that even though the final look of the block is a bit complicated and twisty, each unit that is pieced for this block is the exact same construction.

Normally, I like to piece things ‘as I see them’—following the layout of the final block for each unit.  However, for this block, we recommend organizing your piecing all the exact same direction to take advantage of the same construction.  It will go a long way to helping avoid the confusion of figuring out what goes where as the units rotate around to form the full block.  Then, once you’ve completed all the units, lay them all out before sewing your final block together.

Because we know this block can be a bit of a mindbender, it’s time for another giveaway!

MFCIM Pattern Correction Notes:

For ALL blocks, the measurement given for Finished Size is the size once the block is sewn into the quilt (after taking out seam allowance).  A block with a finished size of 18”x18” will measure 18.5”x18.5” when the piecing is completed but is not yet sewn into the final quilt.

BLOCK 17: In the ‘Piecing’ section, the third block pairing reads correctly that you should use Fabric 1 & 6 to make HST.  However, the thumbnail image for the HST shows the incorrect fabrics, they should be the Green and Pink for Fabrics 1 and 6.  All of the cutting instructions are correct for the block.

BLOCK 18: In the ‘Piecing’ section, the thumbnail images for the block components are correct, but the fabrics listed for each are wrong.  The first thumbnail needs Fabric 1 & 9, and the second thumbnail need Fabric 8 & 1.  All of the cutting instructions are correct for the block.

We will continue to list any pattern corrections in these blog posts for your reference.
