At the Seashore - Sparkler
Hello! I'm Heather Long of Coffee and Quilts and I'm thrilled to be part of this summer's quilt-a-long. Each summer, my husband and I follow his family's tradition of going to Vinalhaven, ME. My father-in-law's birthday is on the Fourth of July and we all enjoy watching the fireworks. I designed this block, Summer Sparklers, in honor of my father-in-law and his festive birthday. The gorgeous blues and greys of Origami by Janet Clare were the perfect choice of fabrics for Maine - cool and restful.
This post is part of our summer quilt-along series. Find the rest of the posts by clicking {here}.
NOTE: Heather's block uses only three fabrics. The instructions below are for 4 fabrics.
Fabric A:
- (8) 2.5” squares
- (8) 1.5” x 4.5” rectangles
- (8) 1.5” squares
Fabric B:
- (4) 4.5” squares
Fabric C:
- (4) 2.5” x 4.5” rectangles
Fabric D:
- (1) 4.5” square
- (8) 2.5” squares
EASY CORNER TRIANGLES
1. Draw a diagonal line on the back of (2) 2.5” Fabric A squares. Place 1 Fabric A square in the corner of (1) 4.5” Fabric B square. Sew along the marked line. Trim 1/4” away from the line and press. Repeat on the opposite corner. Repeat to make 4 of these units.
2. Draw a diagonal line on the background of (2) 1.5” Fabric A squares. Align with the top left edge of (1) 2.5” x 4.5” Fabric C rectangle. Sew on the marked line. Trim 1/4” away from sewn line. Press. Repeat on the adjacent top corner. Repeat on each of the remaining 2.5” x 4.5” Fabric C rectangles to make 4 of these units.
3. Sew (1) 1.5” x 4.5” Fabric rectangles to each side of the unit created in Step 2. Repeat to make 4.
4. Add 2.5” Fabric D squares using the Easy Corner Triangle method as described in Step 1. Make 4 of these units.
