Color Weave Quilt
Color Weave Quilt
Hi there! This is Julie Hirt of 627handworks and I'd like to share a pattern using the colorful Tucker Prairie line. Sometimes I just want to make something quick and easy - and these large blocks come together fast! There are several different quilt sizes you can make using 2 layer cakes, so be sure to check out those options out below.
For this tutorial I made the "Throw Size" measuring 57" x 68".
1 layer cake Tucker Prairie
1 layer cake Moda Bella Solids
1/2 yard fabric for binding with 2.5" strips
3.5 yards for backing
Size Options (binding & backing may differ from above):
Crib: 12 blocks - 4 blocks wide, 3 rows (38" x 51")
Toddler Throw: 18 blocks - 5 blocks wide, 3 rows (47.5" x 51")
Throw: 24 blocks - 6 blocks wide, 4 rows (57" x 68")
Twin: 35 blocks - 7 blocks wide, 5 rows (66.5" x 85")
Full/Double: 40 blocks - 8 blocks wide, 5 rows (76" x 85")
Extra Long Twin: 42 blocks - 7 blocks wide, 6 rows (66.5" x 102")
Grab your fabrics and let's get started.
Pull 24 prints and 24 solids.
Place a print and solid right sides together. Stitch 1/4" seam allowance along one side.
Lay your block on your cutting mat and from the stitched side measure over 3.5" from the edge of the fabric (NOT the stitch line). Then measure 5" from the edge (or 1.5" from the first marking).
Cut along those lines. You'll have a stitched section, two 1.5" strips and two 5" strips.
Alternate your colors and prints and layout: 5", 1.5", sewn section, 1.5", 5".
(In my head I refer to it as large, small, medium, medium, small, large.)
Stitch together.
You should have one block measuring 10" x 17.5".
It's okay to trim the sides slightly if needed, just make sure all of your blocks are trimmed to the same size.
Iron to the print side. When assembling the blocks the seam allowances will fold in opposite directions, making it easy to nest up your blocks.
Repeat until you have 24 blocks.
This will go super fast if you make an assembly line (pair and stitch all the blocks, then measure and cut all the blocks, then piece all of the blocks at the same time).
Align your blocks so colors/prints are opposite from block to block and row to row.
Arrange in 4 rows of 6 blocks.
This would also be fun using solids (for this size you need 48 assorted 10" squares).
Throw size quilt measuring 57" x 68".
I hope you enjoy this one - if you make a Color Weave Quilt I would love to see your version! Feel free to contact me through 627handworks.com or tag me on Instagram @juliehirt
