Did Someone Say Cake? - Part 3

Did Someone Say Cake? - Part 3

Did Someone Say Cake?  Actually, the question has been "what kind of cake is this"?

While we haven't gotten an official answer, the consensus here is that it's a Carrot Cake.  So before we get to quilts, I have a couple of Carrot Cake questions.  Spices - cinnamon only? Nutmeg only?  Or cinnamon and nutmeg?  Pecans or walnuts?  Raisins?

For me - cinnamon only, walnuts, and no raisins.

Layer Cake quilts!  We've got three more quilts from Did Someone Say Cake? to share today.  So let's get to them.

This is Cottage Garden by Jessica Dayon.

CT MBS Did Someone Say Cake 3 - Jessica Dayon Cottage Garden

Made with 30s Playtime by Chloe's Closet, this 74" x 74" quilt is made with one Layer Cake, assorted prints for backgrounds and the pieced border, and additional yardage for the flower blocks, borders, binding and backing.

What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake? Bread N Butter by American Jane.

What is your favorite kind of cake?  Cheesecake.  And I love this Perfect New York Style Cheesecake recipe by Simply Recipes.

How long have you been a MBS Chef? I shared my first MBS pattern in December of 2017, the Mod Tree Block for the Countdown to Christmas quilt-along.

Wouldn't a quilt made with just these blocks be very cool?  Mod Tree Block - December 2017.

My favorite part of making a quilt is... All of it! After a few months of quilting, I vowed to love every part of it. I wanted to make sure I enjoyed all of it, and that I didn't have anything negative associated with it because this had become my passion. If there was a part I didn't like doing, I worked to find a new way to do that so I could enjoy it.

My least favorite part of making a quilt is... None! I love it all!

Field and Flock by Christine Weld is our second Lake Cake quilt today.

Checkerboards and flying geese combine in this 64" x 64" quilt, made with Bonnie & Camille's Sunday Stroll collection.

What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake?  That would be a toss up between Little Snippets by Bonnie and Camille (I just love that measuring tape print!) and Cider by Basic Grey (the colors are so fresh and classic all at once).

What is your favorite kind of cake?  Does tiramisu count as cake? I was lucky enough to live in Italy for a few years. My husband is in the Army and we were stationed in the northern part of the country a few years back. The desserts there are all amazing!

Answer to question - YES! There is flour, eggs, sugar... cake.

How long have you been a MBS Chef?  My first MBS pattern was Charming Peels in April 2016.

My favorite part of making a quilt is... I love planning out a quilt - sketching a pattern, choosing colors, pulling fabric, even cutting and organizing! Something about getting a quilt all ready to be pieced is so satisfying, almost like getting all your books and supplies ready for the first day of school.

My least favorite part of making a quilt is... I'm not a big fan of the quilting part of quilting. My first quilt teacher told me there were three ways to quilt - by hand, by machine, or by check. I choose option three! I'm thankful for the talented longarm quilters who make my quilts shine!

And finally, Susan Vaughan's Friends Forever.

One Layer Cake of Fig Tree's Strawberries and Rhubarb, yardage for backgrounds, sashing, borders, binding and backing, will make this 62" x 62" Friends Forever quilt.

What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake?  Hands down, Strawberry Fields by Fig Tree and Company.  Part of me wishes that I never used it, but more of me is happy that the quilts recipient loves and snuggles with it daily.

What is your favorite kind of cake?  I don't think I have met any kind of cake that I don't like!  My favorites are probably Chocolate, Marble or Carrot....or maybe even Spice?  I told you, cake is my dessert of choice, and bonus points if they are cupcakes!

Fun fact about me: The proper way to eat a cupcake is to split the "cake" part in half, and put the bottom half on top of the icing, making a little cupcake sandwich.  This allows for optimal cake/icing ratio in all bites.  Try it!  You will never go back!

How long have you been a MBS Chef?  My first project with Moda Bake Shop was the X's and O's quilt in 2018.  I have been enjoying making quilts, and participating in the summer and Christmas quilt-alongs since then.

CT MBS Did Someone Say Cake 3 - Susan Vaughan Xs and Os

Susan's X's and O's quilt - this quilt is also included in the Best of Moda Bake Shop book.

My favorite part of making a quilt is... Everybody loves to look at and shop for fabric, there is so much inspiration to be found in that step. Aside from that, I really love to cut!  There is something about putting in a fresh blade in your rotary cutter and it sliding through your fabric with ease.   I find the uniform stacks of fabric all cut to size and line up so satisfying and it puts me in the right mindset for sewing my project.

My least favorite part of making a quilt is... I don't enjoy pinning and sewing borders.  I often pause after I have assembled the quilt top and try to talk myself out of the need for borders.  After a few hours on the design wall and maybe a few days of procrastination, I put them on.  I have to chuckle because I usually spend more time debating the need for borders, then actually pinning and sewing them on!

That's it for this week.  We're back next Monday with the last three Layer Cake quilts in the book.

It's Super Bowl Sunday this weekend, so a layer cake or two is definitely planned.

The fabric kind.  And the edible kind.
