It’s Week 10 of Blockheads 5 – Group 2, which means we are officially a third of the way through this round of blocks! Today’s featured designer is Alexia Abegg of Ruby Star Society, and she’s given us a fantastic scrap-busting block.

You can find this week’s pattern here: BH5 – Group 2, Block 10 – 16-Patch Star by Alexia Abegg

Something new we’re planning for this round of Blockheads is a weekly video. You can follow along with me as I sew the block of the week and share my tips and tricks and talk about different construction techniques. I’ll post the videos on YouTube and share them here on the blog. You can watch this week’s video below:

I love sharing different notions with you all each week in these videos, and sometimes these notions are new to me – like the Acorn Easy Press Pen that I used for the very first time in this video! So my “WOW” reaction is really genuine – I was really impressed by how flat my seams were after using the Easy Press Pen before pressing. Definitely check out the Easy Press Pen in action in this week’s video!

I also use a couple of other helpful notions in this week’s video: Omnigrid Glow Line Tape for marking trim lines on my rulers for quick spotting, and the Omnigrid 14” Rotating Cutting Mat. If you haven’t used a rotating cutting mat, I highly recommend it! Repetitive trimming – of HSTs and flying geese, for example – goes so much faster with a rotating cutting mat. Be sure to ask for the Easy Press Pen and Fabric Treatment, Omnigrid Glow Line Tape, and Omnigrid rotating cutting mat at your favorite quilt shop!

Our block this week uses HSTs for the star points, but I know some of you prefer to use flying geese to achieve that effect. If you'd like to make flying geese instead of HSTs, the cutting instructions are below. PLEASE NOTE: If you make flying geese instead of HSTs, you will have to assemble the block differently than is written in the pattern.

For 6” finished blocks:

B: (4) 2” x 3 1/2” rectangles
C: (8) 2” squares

For 12” finished blocks:

B: (4) 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” rectangles
C: (8) 3 1/2” squares

Are you ready to see our blocks?

Lissa is using Nantucket Summer for her blocks.

Alison is making a fall version in 12” blocks and a patriotic version in 6” blocks.

And I am making a traditional/repro scrappy fall version and a sweet/cottage-y Americana version in 6” blocks.

Now…off you go to press, cut, and sew! And don’t forget to share your blocks with us in our Facebook group or on Instagram (#modablockheads5)!
